Europe Makes Cars Smarter and Roads Safer

From 7 July 2026, every newly registered passenger car and van in the European Union must comply with a new generation of mandatory safety requirements. The measures go well beyond a routine technical update: they represent another important step in Europe’s strategy to reduce road deaths, protect vulnerable road users and prepare vehicles for an increasingly automated future.

The new rules require manufacturers to integrate more advanced driver assistance technologies into their vehicles. These include improved automatic emergency braking systems capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists, as well as driver distraction warning systems designed to identify when attention is no longer focused on the road.

Additional requirements address forward visibility, tyre performance and safety glass. Together, these measures are intended not only to protect drivers and passengers during a collision, but also to prevent accidents before they happen as part of the EU’s Vision Zero strategy.
